چکیده

F a c u l t y M e n t o r Jim Matthews became interested in his research project through a class on phenomenology taught by Professor Smith. His project is unique, addressing the fundamental philosophical question of whether we create the world for ourselves or simply assign meaning to an objectively existing world. His favorite part of the research was finding and developing connections between modern theories and those that are 100 years old. Jim says that his research experience has given him a good introduction to some of the complex questions of philosophy that might not be addressed in the classroom. After graduation, Jim hopes to pursue a Ph.D., working in the field of philosophy of cognitive science. Husserl ing Hoffman: Reframing the Explanatory Gap

Sync-Ing in the Stream of Experience Time-Consciousness in Broad, Husserl, and Dainton

By examining Dainton's account of the temporality of consciousness in the context of long-running debates about the specious present and time consciousness in both the Jamesian and the phenomenological traditions, I raise critical objections to his overlap model. Dainton's interpretations of Broad and Husserl are both insightful and problematic. In addition, there are unresolved problems in Dai...

Phenomenal Concepts and the Explanatory Gap

Confronted with the apparent explanatory gap between physical processes and consciousness, philosophers have reacted in many different ways. Some deny that any explanatory gap exists at all. Some hold that there is an explanatory gap for now, but that it will eventually be closed. Some hold that the explanatory gap corresponds to an ontological gap in nature. In this paper, I want to explore an...

Individuals who attribute negative life events to external, transient, and specific factors, rather than internal, stable, and global self-characteristics, may experience fewer deleterious outcomes, including...

Husserl and Haugeland on Constitution

Both Husserl and Haugeland develop an account of constitution to address the question of how our mental episodes can be about physical objects and thus, through the intentional relation, bridge the gap between the mental and the physical. The respective theories of the two philosophers of very different background show not only how mental episodes can have empirical content, but also how this c...

Self-Representationalism and the Explanatory Gap

According to the self-representational theory of consciousness – self-representationalism for short – a mental state is phenomenally conscious when, and only when, it represents itself in the right way. Part of the motivation for this view is a conception of phenomenal consciousness as involving essentially a subtle, primordial kind of self-consciousness. A consequence of this conception is tha...
